Dice - Pyramid - D6
Think outside the box (the cube) and get an all-new perspective on the d6!
How these six-sided dice work
These six-sided dice are based on two triangular pyramids joined base-to-base (a dipyramid). This polyhedron doesn't have parallel opposing faces, so an edge faces up rather than a face.
Numbers to each side of the edge indicate the result of the toss. Every dice roll is read from two faces at once: a small step that makes pupils look closely at the shape.
A fair D6 for exploring probability with 6-sided dice
The Pyramid D6 does the same job as standard dice, but in a different shape. In the classroom, this works well when pupils compare it with a standard 16mm cube die and test whether both are fair.
For example, pupils can try rolling each die 60 times and recording a tally. This lets them discuss randomness, expected frequency and why each face has the same probability.
As a random number generator, it fits any activity that uses 6-sided dice, from board games to a pair of backgammon dice. It also adds a new shape to a collection of polyhedral gaming dice.
RPG players will recognise the idea: the d8 is an octahedron, the d10 a pentagonal trapezohedron and the d20 an icosahedron. The Pyramid D6 gives the familiar 1 to 6 range a shape of its own.
