Teaching place value in the classroom

In the classroom, this works well when pupils roll, read the number aloud, then write it in numerals. Partitioning follows naturally: 3,000 + 400 + 20 + 5 shows each digit's value from thousands down to ones, through the hundreds and tens.

The same dice support counting on, addition and subtraction games, and multiplication by 10 or 100. As hands-on place value resources for teaching, they fit a maths mastery approach such as Singapore maths, in which concrete objects come before written methods.
