These 4-sided polyhedral dice are the D4 dice used extensively in ancient games, and in many modern ones too. The common D4 is tetrahedral: four equilateral triangle faces, with no flat top face to read.

Using a D4 in the classroom

In the classroom, this works well when pupils compare the D4 with a cube. Holding the shape makes it clear why the score is read differently. A natural next step is to record each die roll and compare the results with a 1 in 4 chance.
