A Fibonacci spiral clock that turns time into maths
The Fibonacci Spiral Clock is an analogue timepiece with a mathematical twist. A spiral made from Fibonacci numbers marks the hours, and the minutes work normally.
This video on Tarquin's YouTube Channel shows the simple mathematical elegance of the design. In practice, one look at the hour hand is enough to read the time.
How the Fibonacci clock spiral grows from squares
The classic Fibonacci spiral is drawn through squares whose side lengths follow the Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and onwards. Together, these squares fill a shape that gets closer and closer to the famous golden rectangle.
The curve joins opposite corners of each square in turn. Hands-on, the idea clicks when a student sketches the squares on squared paper and traces the curve through them.
A leaflet on Fibonacci and the Golden Ratio
Each clock comes with a leaflet explaining Fibonacci and the Golden Ratio. The clock is best suited to a classroom wall or a home desk: the maths stays in view all day.
Design, guarantee and Fibonacci spiral clock specifications
Designed and made in the UK, using German engineering and materials with Italian mathematics. The clock is backed by a 10-year guarantee.
- Stand included as pictured, but also wall mountable as on the pink wall: use it as a desk clock or a wall clock
- Available in several colours; the silver shown is the same clock in different light
- Size: 27 cm (10.5") high x 16 cm (6.25") at its widest point
- Power: one AA battery, not included
The Fibonacci clock makes a gift for the maths enthusiast in your life, including you. Try counting the squares along the spiral arm with a student and see how quickly the sequence appears.
